What more could a good ol' Canadian boy like myself need?
Ever since releasing myself from my creativity hindering companion, I have been like a kid in a candy store. Creativity and exploration of new and exciting things has been OOZING out of me.
Yesterday I thought (after listening to the chart topper "Oh Canada" song) to myself about just how much I missed a good, hearty Canadian dish, called poutine.
After hearing it mentioned in the song, "Oh Canada by Classified", as being "Canadian invented" (don't laugh cause even the Ticos are lovin this song, it's got a catchy melody), I thought I should investigate that claim. After talking with some friends (Canadians) over dinner, no one believed it actually was invented in Canada but rather more likely in Belgium or France somewhere. They were wrong!
Apparently poutine was created in the remote areas of Quebec in the late 50's. Many areas of Quebec have claimed it was invented in their community however one thing is definitely for certain...poutine was created in Quebec.
So here we are in Costa Rica and it's Saturday evening. What to do?
How about a little Hockey Night in Canada, a beer and hey...wouldn't a poutine be nice in the mix also?
So I set out to make my own poutine for the first time in Costa Rica.
The recipe is a no-brainer but worth it's weight in gold.
To make a poutine all you need to do is make some regular cut fries (home cut are best!) and have them nice and crispy. Then make some beef gravy and have it nice and hot. Put the fries in to a bowl (preferably stoneware) and before adding the hot gravy over top of the fries you need to add your cheese curds ( Monte Rico grated in Costa Rica). Then slowly drizzle the hot gravy over top of your cheese and fries and before you know it, you are eating poutine, drinking a beer and watching the Canucks smear Toronto in their home rink! ;)
